IMAP Presents on Conflict of Interest at Healthcare Purchasing Conference
On March 3rd, 2010, the Healthcare Group Purchasing Industry Initiative hosted a Best Practices Forum in Washington DC, taking as its theme “Anchoring Integrity in the Health Care Supply Chain.”
IMAP’s Susan Chimonas, Ph.D., Associate Research Scholar & Co-Director of Research, and Zachary Frosch, Research Associate, were on hand to deliver a presentation on the state of industry conflicts of interest with health care organizations – how marketing efforts by drug and device manufacturers have the potential of compromising patient care.
The presentation began with an overview of the current state of health care COI research, noting substantial research done to confirm both the efficacy of drug/device marketing efforts and the potential dangers to patients. The talk also touched on the important role transparency plays in bringing conflicts to light, and the effect that Federal Sunshine legislation may have on shaping future industry practices.
